A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out

This could be a very interesting year for the Mississippi legislature. With complete control of the House and Senate, Mississippi Republicans could move a lot of their legislation through without many problems. One bill that I really like is Senate Bill 2224. It’s still in committee right now, but if it passes it would require able-bodied people who receive public financial assistance to perform 20 hours of community service per week or they won’t get paid. It’s about time! Mississippi has got to find a way to break the cycle of handouts. Just look at the model the Salvation Army is providing for our community. Their new mission is to provide a hand up not a hand out. Again, the bill is still in committee but that would be really interesting to see what will happen if it passes.
