The Dad I Want To Be
This story really got me. It's the story of a man named Rick Van Beek who (last weekend) in Michigan finished a triathlon carrying, pushing, and pulling his 13 year old daughter Maddie. Maddie has cerebral palsy and functions on a level equivalent to a 3 month old. She can't walk or speak. Doctors and her family are not even sure she knows what's going on around her most of the time. But Rick insists she loves the water and being outside.

The video link from You Tube included below is a little shaky. But when you realize that the video was taken by his SON -- gulp -- the gravity of how this dad gave himself away takes on a new meaning. It took the better part of the day yesterday for me to get a handle on my emotions because the image of Jesus carrying the cross in my mind is so similar to this man carrying his daughter through a triathlon. And to hear the son cheering for his dad and sister the entire way through the video...wow!!

There are so many times in my life that I can remember choosing to not give myself away. Not only struggling to give myself away, but making the extra effort of offer my SAVIOR to someone else. Can you imagine the strength it takes to run a triathlon by yourself? Let alone the burn of pushing, pulling, and carrying your child? I hope I'll be the kind of dad today that's willing to find the experience that makes a difference in the life of my family.

Man, That's Why We're Here
Life is full of big and little "wow" moments. This was one of those little ones that generated an ear to ear grin for this increasingly spiritual dad. I had taken my two boys Colby, 10, and Collin, 6, out fishing last weekend. We had been fishing at one of our honey holes for about 2 hours with only about 4 fish to show for our time. It's a good thing we weren't fishing for dinner because God had other plans.

It's such a cool feeling as a dad to know that your little boys gravitate toward you. For the entire two hours that we had been fishing, the guys kept following me up and down the bank of the lake. Fortunately, I didn't wind up with a hook in my hand this time. :-) We'd watch a few little alligators swimming a few feet from the bank and keep easing on down the bank away from the little eating machines.

It didn't take long for the boys to notice that we weren't catching as many fish as we usually do. Naturally the complaints were flying faster than they could cast. That's when I looked up from the lake to notice one of the most beautiful sunsets I'd ever seen.

I snapped this picture with my phone as a reminder that God gave me that opportunity to forget about fishing and focus on his handiwork. My jaw dropped when I realized I wasn't at that lake fishing for largemouth. I was there fishing for men. Specifically, the two little men on that lake bank. A radio friend of mine reminded me that someday God will ask us: 1. What did you do with the family I gave you? 2. What did you do with my son? Got your answers ready?
